Lois Marion Goodwin (nee McAuley)
It is with great love and deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Lois, wife of Warren on July 31, 2014, with her family by her side.
Lois was born during a prairie blizzard on a farm near Welwyn Saskatchewan, on March 5, 1934 to Ewart and Lillie McAuley. She was tended to by her Aunt Irene and mother while her father was fetching the doctor. Being a 2 pound preemie, she had to be kept warm by the wood stove oven. The depression hit the farms hard in the 30’s, so her father moved the family to Sherridon, Manitoba where he worked at a mine and her mother taught school. She talked fondly of her teen years swimming and skating.
The family moved to Atikokan, where she worked at Steep Rock Iron Mines as a Payroll Clerk. It was there she met her wonderful and caring husband Warren, and they were wed on October 16, 1954 (they would have been married 60 years this coming October).
They had four children, and in 1969 they moved to Thunder Bay. Determined to further her education, Lois attended Confederation College for her E.R.T. diploma and then went on to Lakehead University where she received a BA & B.Ed. This led to her employment with the Lakehead Board as a dedicated JK/SK teacher for 24 years until retirement in 1994. She taught at Sherbrooke, Vickers Heights and Rosslyn Road. She took such pride in helping her students make hand plaques for their mothers on Mothers’ Day.
Lois was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother who was always supportive, warm and caring. She was dearly loved and will be greatly missed by her husband Warren, son Gordon (Gill) and daughters Beverly, Susan and Heather (Richard Trottier). Also left to mourn are her grandchildren Rick (Kandyce), Blake (Angela), Greg, Christine (Kevin Bell), Kimberly, David, Ayla (Adam Goodwin), Keith (Sudisha) and great-grandchildren Ember and Fia. She will be missed, too, by her brother Rodney, sister-in-law Pat, brother & sister-in-law Murray and Pat, and many nieces and nephews and a multitude of friends.
Lois was predeceased by her parents Ewart and Lillie, and brother Gordon.
She will be forever missed and lovingly remembered by her family and friends. Her happiest times were spent with the family. She was an avid reader, and enjoyed watching Blue Jays baseball games, curling and playing Canasta with friends – Claude and Vera Riley at their camp at Eva Lake.
Lois was a devoted member and strong supporter of Broadway United Church and will be sadly missed by members of the congregation. She was a two-time breast cancer survivor who showed all of us her great strength, determination and will to survive.
In lieu of flowers, Lois wished that donations be given to the Northern Cancer Fund. Special thanks to Drs. Sacevich, Vergidis, Sweet & Sokolova and the wonderful nurses and staff at TBRHSC.
Cremation has taken place and the service was held at Broadway United Church on August 5, 2014.
