John Albert White
John Albert White, 80 years, passed away peacefully, February 21, 2016, at the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre due to complications following a stroke.
He was born January 13, 1936 in Emo and spent his childhood in Finland, Ont. After working at O&M running logs down the Cascades, he came to Atikokan in 1955. He met his one true love, Lois Croswell in 1956 and they were married on November 28, 1959. John worked at CAC Steep Rock Dredge until it shut down in 1961, then at Steep Rock mine, and after it closed in 1979, he worked at Proboard until he retired in 1997.
John is survived by his wife Lois, son Gary (Donna), daughter Susan (Victor Iannandrea); grandchildren Victoria, John, Michelle, Amy, Jenna, Kira and Karl who were a joy to his heart; sisters Marg Fugate of Prince George, B.C. and Joanne Hutnyk (Tony) of Kamloops, B.C. and brothers Reg (Anne) and David of Atikokan; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and special friends.
He was predeceased by his mother, Louise Victoria (1992), father, John Williams (1970) and son, Kevin (2012).
John loved playing cards, fishing and gardening. He especially loved the yearly visits from family and friends when they were reunited at his home on Niobe Lake. He was co-founder in 1977 of the Niobe Lake Fire Department and an active member for many years. He loved to travel and enjoyed two cruises to the Caribbean and Hawaii, numerous trips to the USA, and a wonderful trip to England where he met his cousins. He was also fortunate to travel Canada from coast to coast.
A celebration of John’s life will be held on July 23, 2 pm at the Full Gospel Church, 135 Maple Crescent. Internment, lunch, and fellowship will follow at the Niobe Lake residence.
In lieu of flowers the family encourages donations be made to the Atikokan General Hospital Foundation, Box 58, Atikokan, Ontario P0T 1C0.
