Matt Slobozian

With great sadness the family of Matthew (Dmytro) Slobozian, 90, announce his pass-ing on November 9, 2014 at Rainycrest Nursing Home in Fort Frances, Ontario, with his family his side.

Matt was born on October 27, 1924 in Ohra, Manitoba, one of 14 children. He lived in Atikokan for many years, working in the bush, until hired at the Pluswood mill, where he worked until his retirement. Matt and Judy spent many winters in Arizona where they made many lifelong friends.

He was an avid outdoorsman who thoroughly enjoyed hunting, fishing, pine cone picking, min-now trapping… just about any-thing to do with the outdoors. Grandchildren Mike and Lisa have many fond memories of hunting and fishing with ‘Papa’ – the ones they caught, and the ones that go away. He loved Mike and Lisa more than life itself, was proud of all their accomplishments, and always interested in what they were doing – even to the point of checking the weather where they lived on a daily basis so he knew what they were up against on their way to work.

When Papa, Mike, and Lisa, weren’t out hunting or fishing, you could usually find them around the kitchen table playing a mean game of crib, joking and teasing mercilessly, especially if one of them got skunked.

Matt thoroughly enjoyed his trips out the ‘the farms’ to visit with his family, bringing Evelyn with him frequently; he especially enjoyed staying at his brother Fred’s (Elsie), where many an afternoon was spent in the backyard telling stories of the good old days, drinking some cold ones, and sharing many, many laughs. He also enjoyed visiting with the many family members and friends in the Grandview/Roblin area.

Matt will be deeply missed by his step daughter Evelyn (Andy), his grandchildren Mike (Ashleen) and Lisa (James), and his step son Joe. He is also survived by his son Jim (Brenda), their three sons, and his daughter Betty May, his brothers, sisters and many cousins, nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his parents and his wife Judy.

Cremation has taken place. Friends and family are invited to a come and go luncheon at the White Otter Inn, Saturday, July 11, from 12:30 to 2 pm. Memorial donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or Rainycrest Nursing Home (660 Osborne Ave., Fort Frances, ON P9A 3W7). Online condolences may be made at www.Brown FuneralHomeKenora.com
