Marlene Wood

Marlene Mae Wood (nee Jewett), 76, of Atikokan, passed away peacefully at the Atikokan General Hospital on November 12, 2014.

Marlene was born June 29, 1938 in Rainy River, ON. She was the eldest of nine children. Her early years were spent at the family homestead in North Branch, ON.

Marlene met the love of her life, Clinton, when she waitressed at a beanery (railroad café) and with his help made the best milkshake he’d ever had. They were married three months later in 1956 in Fort Frances. Together they raised five children, and to Marlene, they were God’s greatest gifts to her and Clint. They moved to Atikokan in 1972, then moved out west in 1978. They moved back to retire in Atikokan after 20 years in Logan Lake, BC.

Marlene loved country music, and would sing, dance and play guitar endlessly for family and friends to enjoy. She was happiest when cooking big meals for everyone. She was an avid volunteer and member of the Royal Canadian Legion. She was also very talented with her crafts of dried flowers, paintings and material collages.

In 1970 she received her Practical Nursing Diploma and cared for people at both the new and old Atikokan hospitals. She went on to provide Home Care for many of the elderly also when she lived in Logan Lake. All of her life, Marlene enjoyed caring for others and made many friends along the way. She will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved her.

Marlene is survived by her four children, son Rolie (Heather) Wood of Merritt, BC, daughter Becky (Kreg) Groulx of Atikokan, ON, son Wayne (Janice) Wood of Edmonton, AB, and son Steven (Valerie) Wood of Saanich, BC. She is also survived by her brothers Norman (Donna) Jewett, Ernie Jewett, Paul (Carolyn) Jewett and sisters Sharon (Bert) LeFlock, Carol Pollard, Marjorie (Howard) Haw, ten grandchildren, six great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her husband Clinton, in 2006 (two months short of their 50th wedding anniversary). She was also predeceased by her parents, Genevieve and Lyle Jewett, brothers Ronald and Murray Jewett, daughter Charlotte and son-in-law Randy Nicholas, and granddaughter Jennifer Wood.

A memorial service was held November 16 at the Atikokan Royal Canadian Legion. Honorary Pallbearers were brothers’ Norman, Ernie and Paul Jewett and special friend Vernon Wright.

In lieu of flowers, if friends so desire, please make donations to the Atikokan General Hospital. On-line condolences may be made at of www.GreenFuneralHomeFortFrances.com
