Adeline McCormick

Adeline McCormick

Adeline Gertrude McCormick (née Gallant) was born on September 1, 1931 in Angusville, Manitoba, to Frank and Bertha Gallant. Her life ended peacefully, with her family at her side, at the Atikokan General Hospital on June 21, 2014, after a short illness.

Adeline completed her education in Angusville and she lived most of her early life on the family farm located five miles north of Angusville.

She then moved to Winnipeg where she worked as a housekeeper. During this period she met her future husband, Ralph Daniel McCormick, who was working in Winnipeg as a carpenter following the 1950 flood of the Red River.

On March 27, 1951 Adeline and Ralph were married in Winnipeg. Together, they rejected a move to Norway House offered by Ralph’s employer, electing instead to move to Fort Frances, Ontario.

After Fort Frances, the couple moved to Crilly, Ontario where Adeline cooked and maintained the camp home while her husband and crew cut timber. In 1956, they moved to Atikokan, Ontario so Ralph could work for Steep Rock Iron Mines. During this time Adeline worked as a clerk for Chappell’s department store. In 1958, she gave birth to her son, Daniel, followed by the birth of her son Donald in 1962. The family built a new home in Atikokan which remained the family home for the duration of her life. Following the closure of the mines in 1979, Adeline returned to work as a clerk for G & C Enterprises, a caretaker for Canadian National Railways, and finally as a weigh scale assistant with her husband, on the construction of the Bending Lake Highway.

The family traveled widely during summer vacations and experienced much of Canada and the United States. Many historic sites such as forts and museums were normal stops during these trips.

Adeline continued her love of travel with her husband, with trips to the Netherlands for liberation celebrations in 1995 and 2000. These trips were supplemented with excursions to England, France, Germany, Belgium, Italy, Switzerland and Luxembourg. They also managed to escape twelve Canadian winters with lengthy trips to Hawaii. Their interest in Alaska was fulfilled with a cruise along the coast of Alaska.

She served as an active member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #145, Ladies Auxiliary and a member of the quilting and sewing group of Atikokan Fix It Club. She enjoyed cake decorating and took several courses to improve her skills.  Her love for crafts was further developed by many courses provided by the Atikokan Native Friendship Centre, where she developed her skills in leatherwork. She spent many happy hours with her grandchildren, sharing her love of crafts, and teaching them skills they carry on with today.

She is survived by her son Daniel (Trudy) (Fort Frances), grandchildren Catherine (Kingston), Richard (Atikokan), Michael (Meaghan), (Kingston); son Donald (Rita) (Kenora) grandchildren, Evan, (Kenora), Cody (Sarah) (Edmonton), Cori (Cale) (Penticton, BC), and great grandchildren Dylan, Brianna, and Nate (Penticton) and Felicia and  Kolton (Edmonton). She also leaves behind a sister, Violet Nychuk (Swan River, MB), brother-in-law Tom Kiddle (Fort Frances), and numerous nieces and nephews.

Adeline was predeceased by her husband Ralph (2011), parents Frank & Berth Gallant, brothers Edward and Tony, and sister Carrie (Siwak).

Cremation has taken place and a private family interment will take place at a later date. The family asks that in remembrance any donations be made to Atikokan General Hospital or a charity of their choice. On-line condolences may be made in care of www.GreenFuneralHomeFortFrances.com.
