Mervyn McGowan
It is with profound sorrow that the family of Mervyn McGown announces his sudden passing on Saturday, May 24, 2014 in Atikokan.
He was born on August 11, 1930 in Sioux Lookout, Ontario. As a teenager he moved to Fort Frances, where he finished his schooling and joined CN Rail. His work took him all over Northwestern Ontario before settling in Atikokan in 1963. He worked with CN for over 35 years, retiring as the terminal manager.
He was united in marriage with Helen Jackway September 16, 1950, and together they raised four boys.
Mervyn was a quiet man, who loved to spend time outdoors. He enjoyed camping, fishing, and hunting with the family. He was also an amateur radio enthusiast and spent many hours tinkering with his radio and talking to others in the area. Family was very important to Mervyn; he enjoyed his visits with his family and grandchildren. He will greatly missed by all who knew him, especially his son and best friend Harvey.
He leaves behind his sons Charlie (Faith), Dave (Bev), Bill (Tracey) and Harvey and numerous grandchildren. Mervyn was predeceased by his parents George and Ethel McGowan; his wife Helen and brothers Harry, Harvey and Lloyd.
A private family interment will be held. If friends so desire in memoriam donations may be made to the Canadian Diabetes Association or Heart and Stroke Foundation. Online condolences may be made in care of www.GreenFuneralHomeFortFrances.com.
