Agnes Abate

Agnes Maryan Abate (Teevens), 83, of Atikokan, passed away peacefully with her family at her side, on Thursday, March 6, 2014 at the Atikokan General Hospital.

Agnes was born September 10, 1930, in Winnipeg, Manitoba and grew up the youngest in a family of six during the depression years. She attended school in St. Vital, and at an early age developed a lifelong love of learning and caring for others. After high school graduation Agnes chose to follow her religious conviction as a Novice Oblate Sister in Winnipeg where she became active in nursing. Realizing nursing was her true calling, she left the Order and pursued her career as a nurse working in many remote northern communities.

On April 12, 1958 Agnes married Joseph Abate in Winnipeg and shortly thereafter moved to Atikokan, Ontario where they raised three children. She spent many years working to support the community in various capacities and organizations such as the Catholic Women’s League and the Moose Lodge. In later years Agnes was instrumental in establishing the community Home Care Program and supported her efforts with a Diploma in Pastoral Care earned from St. Francis Xavier University at age 72.

After retirement, Agnes and Joe spent many winters in the Rio Grande Valley of southern Texas where the warm winter months brought them much happiness and many dear friends.

Agnes leaves behind her beloved husband of more than 55 years, Joe; children Teresa-Marie (Jim Williams); Tony (Marian); Rose-Marie (Louis Bortolon); and her cherished granddaughters Lisa, Alison and Mia. Additionally, Agnes leaves her dear brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Tony and Frances Marinaro, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Agnes was predeceased by her parents Rose and Michael Teevens, brothers William and Daniel, sister Dorothy, and her sister-in-law and brother-in-law Maria and Armando Malito.

A memorial service will be held on April 5, at St. Patrick’s Church in Atikokan with Fr. E. Odoegbulem and Msgr. P. Stilla officiating. The honourary pallbearers will be Tony Marinaro Jr., Lisa Bortolon, Alison Bortolon, Shirley Allan, Linda Morelli, Dennis Brown, Blake Davidson, Mary Elder, Trudy Herr and Marlene Duff.

Cremation has taken place and inurnment will take place in the Little Falls Cemetery. The family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Atikokan General Hospital.
