Michael Slobozian

On August 22, 2017, Mike took his final breath, at the Atikokan General Hospital in Atikokan, Ontario.

Our loving father, husband, grandfather, brother, great-grandfather, and friend passed away at the age of 97 years, leaving behind a long lifetime of unforgettable memories and experiences.

Let me tell you about Mike’s story. He was born in Seech, Manitoba and was the second eldest of 14 children. Being raised on a farm provided a healthy lifestyle along with plenty of chores and hard work throughout his school-aged years.

At age 22, Mike joined the infantry corps where he served four years in a non-combative role until his discharge in 1946. Then on October 27, 1946, Mike married his beloved wife Ann who would share his life for the next seventy-plus years. Together, they would raise their three children, Shirley, Dennis, and Beverly, in Hudson, Ontario. Fishing, hunting, berry-picking and ski-dooing were some of the activities enjoyed by the family. Vacations were spent in Manitoba, visiting relatives, sharing many good Ukrainian meals and telling a lot of stories from the past. Mike and Ann also enjoyed every opportunity to attend festive social events and dance to their favourite polkas. Mike loved music throughout his life and often talked about playing in a small band with a few of his brothers. He listened to many favourite country stars while playing solitaire at the kitchen table.

For the next four decades, Mike was employed as a bush worker with Great West Timber and Abitibi Timber Ltd. Winter and summer weather conditions added to the overall hardship of this labour job. However, Mike approached these challenges with the strength and conviction he always demonstrated! He was a person who strongly believed in traditional family values and obligations; Mike was very devoted and proud of his family members.

He will be lovingly remembered by his wife Ann, daughters Shirley Karas, Beverly Marciniw (Rob), and son Dennis Slobozian. Grandchildren Quentin, Michael, Kristopher, Gavin, Dennis and Carla will miss him deeply. Mike is also survived by seven great-grandchildren and many other relatives throughout western Canada. A special thank you goes to his sister Elsie Storozynski (Ernest) and family friend Robert Goulet who provided Mike with many special memories.

Mike was pre-deceased by parents Nick and Maria (nee Nowasad) Slobozian and his brothers John, Steve, Fred, Paul, Peter, and Matt Slobozian.

In accordance with family wishes, there will be no funeral services.
