With aching hearts the family of John William Koroscil, 67, announce his passing on Sunday, July 9, 2017. He was born to John and Mabel Koroscil in Geraldton, Ontario, March 24, 1950. The family moved to Atikokan in 1952 where they made their home.
In his younger years he helped his family with the minnow and ice business. He worked on the construction of the Fort Frances highway and part-time at the Atikokan Progress. John started working for Mel Newman’s Ford garage while in high school and later completed his apprenticeship with an inter-provincial license as an auto mechanic. He became shop foreman and worked alongside his brother Doug, and a great group of people, many remaining life-long friends. We never tired of listening to the entertaining stories of their antics at work while hanging out in the backyard garage nicknamed “Korky’s Tearoom”. John and Doug both opened their own garages after the sad news of Newman’s closing. John’s MVR broke out in a devasting fire, but he continued to work out of his great friend John Collition’s garage, and with the help of extremely giving friends and family, the garage was rebuilt where he continued to work until he retired.
John was a caring man with a heart of gold. Anyone who got to listen to him tell stories of days past can vouch for his wonderful sense of humour and would never tire of the way he could make you laugh. John loved spending time with his family and was like a second dad to his nephew Jonathan, who surely inherited his sense of humour. Jonathan and Karen’s kids called him Grampa.
John enjoyed restoring old vehicles. His baby was his 1956 Chev short box. He enjoyed fishing, some bird hunting, bowling, golf, and broomball. He started “Korky’s Tearoom” lobball team consisting of most of his family and good friends. He loved his cats and playing cards at family gatherings. He was an avid dart player right from the start of Interclub Darts. One of our favourite annual gatherings was to make huge batches of sauerkraut which he shared with many.
John leaves behind his sister Carol, nephew Jonathan and wife Karen, their children Winter and Emily; his sister Kathy and husband Rob and children John and Katy Poirier; his niece Sabrina, husband Curtis and children Cody and Alexandre; his uncle Stan on his dad’s side and Aunt Louise on his mom’s side, along with numerous cousins.
He was pre-deceased by his parents John and Mabel, brother Douglas, nephew Daniel, brother-in-law Keith and many close aunts, uncles and dear friends.
A celebration of life was held on Sunday, July 16 at the Royal Canadian Legion.
