Gertrude (Gertie) Habinski
On August 4, 2015, Gertrude (Gertie) Habinski, 87, passed away peacefully at the Atikokan General Hospital.
Gertie moved to Atikokan in 1948 and was employed in the cookery at Steep Rock Iron Mines. It was there that she met Stanley Habinski and they married in 1954. They spent many years together and enjoyed the outdoors which included fishing, hunting and gardening. They were also both avid bowlers.
Stan passed away on December 31, 1999 and Gertie remained in their lifelong residence on Hancock Boulevard until her passing.
Gertie was also predeceased by her parents Arthur and Eliza Portrais of Woodridge, Manitoba. She is survived by sisters Terri Beach of Winnipeg, Manitoba, Cyria Lawn from BC, Richard Poitras of Woodridge, MB as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
If so desired, donations in her memory may be made to the Extended Care Facility of the Atikokan General Hospital or the Canadian Cancer Society.
In honouring Gertie’s wishes, cremation has taken place and there will be a Celebration of Life on October 17, at 2 pm in the Woodridge Community Club, 69 Dennis Street, Woodridge, MB. Her ashes will be placed next to her husband Stan Habinski in the Woodridge cemetery.
