Henry Kooper

It is with great sorrow we announce that Henrickus (Henry) Theodorus Kooper, 92, died on January 22, 2015 at the Atikokan General Hospital surrounded by his loving wife and his two sons.

He was born on September 21, 1922 in Amsterdam, in the Netherlands, and immigrated to Canada aboard the Grote Beere during June, 1954. He arrived in Atikokan in 1959 and worked as part of the construction crews that built the section of Highway 11 at McCauley Creek and later Crilly Bridge. He joined as a mechanic with Steep Rock Iron Mines and serviced the giant trucks moving rock until the mines were closed in 1979, then became a member of the crews at Pluswood 1981 until his retirement in 1987.

Henry, ‘Rickus’, leaves behind his loving wife Angela (or Truis) of 65 years, sons, Kenneth Dwayne Kooper, and Theodore Ramsay Kooper, his wife Denise Marie Kooper, and grandsons Jeremy and Brandon Kooper. He also leaves behind his nephews Gordon and Wayne, his brother’s former wife Susan, and many family members who still reside in the Netherlands.

He was pre-deceased by his parents Maria and Henrickus Theodorus Sr., sisters Marie and Fi, and brother John.

A service was held at the Green Visitation Centre in Atikokan on January 27, with a graveside service attended by close family and friends. A reception was held at the Pioneer Center where he spent many enjoyable years playing card games and enjoying the numerous dances and music fests.

The family would appreciate memorial donations directed to the Atikokan General Hospital which provided exemplary service during Henry’s final days of life.
