Danny Henderson

With deep sorrow, the family of Danny Keith Wilson Henderson announces his sudden passing on Thursday, January 9, 2014, at the age of 57.

Danny was born August 13, 1956, in Atikokan, Ontario, where he spent most of his life. In 1982, he met and married the love of his life, Avis Reashore. Together they had two children, Keith and Alacia. Danny worked at a variety of jobs over his lifetime, most recently driving school bus for Iron Range Bus Lines. He also owned and operated Dan’s Shuttle Service, which was, for Danny, for the benefit and safety of the people of Atikokan. For the last few years, he also was the custodian for the Bunnell Park Municipal Campground.

As anyone who knew Danny knew, he loved the great outdoors. He enjoyed fishing, hunting and camping all with his many friends and was a member of The Nightmare lob ball team. Danny loved his community and served it well while volunteering with many organizations. Special Olympics Atikokan was very dear to his heart. He will be especially missed by the students of Atikokan who rode the bus when he was the driver. Danny had a keen sense of humour, a kind heart, and a big smile. He made friends easily and will be missed by many.

Danny was predeceased by his parents Keith and Elizabeth (Betty) and also his infant brother David. He is survived by his wife Avis, son Keith (Lisa), daughter Alacia, and grandchildren, Albert, Chase and the joy of his life, grand-daughter Averi. He also is survived by his mother-in-law Rose Reashore, father-in-law Gil Reashore, and brothers-in-law Todd Reashore (Brenda, Ashley, Josh, Ethan), Kyle Reashore, Troy Reashore (Maria), many cousins, and his constant companion, his furry buddy Gotcha.

A memorial service and celebration of Danny’s life was held January 19 at the Royal Canadian Legion in Atikokan. If friends desire, in lieu of flowers, a donation can be made at any branch of TD Canada Trust to the account ‘In Trust for the Family of Danny Henderson’.

Henrietta (Hettie) Clark

With heavy hearts the family of Henrietta (Hettie) May Clark announce her passing in hospital after a short illness.

Hettie was born on October 11, 1921 in Keewatin. She met the love of her life Maxwell (Max) as he was going overseas in 1942. Upon his return they were married in 1945 and together they raised their three children in Keewatin and then later moved to Atikokan. In 1968, Hettie rose to the challenge of having to relearn every day routines and speech after the removal of a brain tumour. Hettie worked as the manager of the Sears catalogue store in Atikokan for many years, and received awards for her sales performance.

In 2002, Hettie and Max moved to Kakabeka in order to be closer to family. Their routine often included walking hand-in-hand across the street to the Cascades for lunch. Dr. Alf Lower was a kind friend who looked after their medical needs for many years. After Max’s passing in 2006, Hettie resided first at The Walford and more recently at Roseview Manor where she enjoyed socializing with her many friends. She could be seen wheeling her walker down the hallway heading for coffee with her friends Doris O’Connor and Audrey Dalzell. Despite serious health challenges in the past few years, Hettie’s determination and feistiness continued to amaze both medical personnel and her family.

A kind and gentle soul, Hettie was always there to help others in any way possible. She delighted in spending time with her family. Grandchildren and great grandchildren were always a special joy to her. She loved going for Sunday dinner and visiting with Lorne’s in-laws Alfred and Wilma.

Hettie was predeceased by her parents William and Lily Armour, her brother Douglas who died serving in WWII RCAF, her husband Max, and her son-in-law Richard Petch.

She will be lovingly remembered and dearly missed by her son Lorne (Alice), daughters Cheryl Gingras (Sebastien) and Heather Petch, grandchildren Mark (Michelle), Andy (Alyson), Jessica (Neil), Karren (Darren), great grandchildren Aidan, Kieran, Ethan, Mataya and Keeleigh as well as brothers-in-law Evan (Donna), Alvin, sisters-in-law Norma Reid, Ila Lang (Andy) and cousin Betty Anne Ross.

A funeral service was held March 3 at Redeemer Lutheran Church in Kakabeka with Pastor Gary Heinz officiating. Hettie will rejoin Max at Little Falls Cemetery in Atikokan in the spring; a memorial there for family and friends is being planned. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Heart and Stroke Foundation of Thunder Bay.

Agnes was born September 10, 1930, in Winnipeg, Manitoba and grew up the youngest in a family of six during the depression years. She attended school in St. Vital, and at an early age developed a lifelong love of learning and caring for others. After high school graduation Agnes chose to follow her religious conviction as a Novice Oblate Sister in Winnipeg where she became active in nursing. On April 12, 1958 Agnes married Joseph Abate in Winnipeg and shortly thereafter moved to Atikokan, Ontario where they raised three children. She spent many years working to support the community in various capacities and organizations such as the Catholic Women’s League and the Moose Lodge. In later years Agnes was instrumental in establishing the community Home Care Program and supported her efforts with a Diploma in Pastoral Care earned from St. Francis Xavier University at age 72.

Obituary Lydia Bartsch

Lydia Bartsch

Lydia Editha Bartsch, 83, of Port McNicoll, Ontario, passed away on February 26, 2014 at the Georgian Bay General Hospital, Midland, Ontario, after struggling with Parkinson’s disease for more than ten years.

She was born in Berlin, Germany on July 21, 1930. When Lydia arrived in Atikokan in the fall of 1957 she found herself amazed, shocked, and puzzled. Amazed when she discovered that, despite days of train travel, she had barely crossed half of Canada, only to find herself in a forest larger than all of Europe and with more sparkling lakes in one small corner than in all of Germany; she was shocked by a winter so frigid it staggered the breath; and puzzled by a culture she didn’t yet understand.

After spending six years in Atikokan, on Maple Crescent and Willow Road, the Bartsch family decamped to Quetico Centre on Eva Lake where Lydia fulfilled her dream of pursuing lifelong learning. It was there that her reluctant acceptance of a northern lifestyle gradually evolved into an avid appreciation of the beauty and wild-ness she was delighted to discover. Gradually she came to realize that swamps and rocks and trees and water cradled sunset canoe rides, brisk fall strides, and a powdery white carpet for snowshoeing.

During her 30-year career at Quetico Centre, Lydia conducted workshops in ceramics, weaving, rug hooking, painting, calligraphy, silk-screening, stained glass, housekeeping, teamwork, wellness, Yoga, and youth wilderness adventure. She not only taught English as a second language, she also ensured that all QC literature contained proper spelling and grammar. Her passion for do-it-yourself learning set a standard that encouraged her family and those around her to develop their interests in music, art and literature, and to live life with full abandon.

Lydia is remembered as a fearless experimenter who tried anything in her eagerness to learn.

She is survived by her husband of 64 years, Guenter Bartsch; sons Joerg Bartsch of Atikokan and Werner Bartsch (Elaine Stewart) of Toronto; grandchildren, Robin (Terresa), Jordan (Susan), Lis, Alysha (Udit), Dakota, Amy (Jon) and Jillian (Paul); great-grandchildren Ophelia and Henry; sister Hannelore of Berlin, Germany, niece Sabine, former  daughter-in-law Jacqueline, and numerous other relatives in Berlin. She was pre-deceased by her youngest sister Renate, daughter-in-law Lori, and former daughter-in-law Cynthia.

A family service is planned at a later date in Port McNicoll to honour her life as someone who observed, listened, and experienced, and who was always willing to step into someone else’s world.

Memorial donations may be made to Atikokan General Hospital.
